Received the following comment from Victor M. Mahachi of Wild Horizons in Zimbabwe

Dear Martin

Sorry, could not post the comments on Sustainable tourism on net but the below might get other Think tanks to debate on the measures. I admit they are academic but if we use them as a guide line we may end up talking the same language.

The R's to Sustainable tourism developmennt

1. Reduce- on the amount of consumption of both renewable and non renewable resource and use to the maximun renewable sources of Energy such as Sunlight and water- Use energy saving lights, Switch offf or unplug all gargets when not in use, Turn off Engines when not in motion

2. Recycle and Reuse - all recyclable materials- water, plastic and or rubber

3. Reingeneer or Redesign- all operations should be designed to use less resources e.g. Combine transfers or subhire seats on all transfers if say you have only 2pax in 20 seat capacity courier vehichle. Use electronic Filing system to printing ot other use propel the concept of a paper free Office

4. Refuse- coorperation with all airlines, tour operators ot Travel Agencies who have no Accreditation or Certificates for at least implimenting measures to achieve a required level of sustainable resource use

To me this sounds like an incomplete argument. Clearly we need to reduce but to consider that there will be no more fights is just radical. firstly there is already progress will by the nature of the pressure of the situation continue to be progress. so there will be electric cars and electric airplanes. Consider that there was a Chinese plane that went to Oshkosh that was electric. We are at the beginnings of something that in 30 years when the oil is finished I think we will wonder what the purpose of the stuff used to be.

We live in great times and when life gives you lemons its best to make lemonade. So I even see the positive spin to SA getting the most expensive electricity in the world within the next 3 years. It makes economic sense to replace with alternative sustainable energy. So I say thank you eskom because this will be the biggest kick south africa will get to push ourselves into a greener future.
