This Tourism Week 26 March 2010 (Follow-up To Yesterday’s Mail)
TGCSA Changes Deadline Date
Regarding yesterday’s mail (“Is the Tourism Grading Council Nuts”): it was interesting to read an article posted today by the good people at Tourism Update:
“Comment on new grading criteria by April 9 – TGCSA
“The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) is giving industry a further week to comment on the new grading criteria (see its website: www.tourismgrading.co.za).
“The deadline for submissions on the new grading criteria for hospitality establishments in South Africa is [now] April 9. The new criteria is expected to be implemented in October 2010.”
So: you have some reading to do this Easter. Go to the TGCSA’s web site, and download these proposals, and get commenting. It’s very important (although, sadly, many people contacted me after reading yesterday’s article, and said that the costs of grading, taken in hand with these new and onerous criteria, would force them to abandon the scheme altogether. And if they’re going to give up their stars, they say, why should they waste their time reading their criteria? Market forces, you see, market forces…).
Please share your comments on the new criteria – and read other people’s comments – here, on This Tourism Week.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHello Ms Kunene and your fellow KPMG colleagues,
I have seen a number of replies to you from the various industry owners and totally agree with them. after getting through the first 20 pages of your 83 page proposed new grading criteria, I realised that if will be virtually impossible to meet all your new standards without major upgrades and expense.
In fact I do not know one local business that would qualify for their current grading status with you, based on your new proposals without going through enormous expense and even then, many would fail to meet you room size criteria, just to mention 1 new requirement
By holding the workshops in only the 3 major cities all your feedback and proposals would have come from the hospitality owners that services the Corporate business sector. What feed back have you or did you get from the tourist sector establishments? Now you want me to put in a safe into every room to take a 17″ laptop – how ridiculous – I’m surprised you did not stipulate it had to be hidden or put into a hole in the floor.
I agree with the other comments in regards to whatever feed back we give you, it is just a smokescreen and certainly with your time frame for the implementation of this project, all our comments will certainly not be looked into/investigated as indicated by the TGCSA
All you are doing is opening the door for another company to set up a grading system and take your business, that’s, if you have any left after your implementation of these proposals, which, as another reply said – you have already decided to implement and the replies/comment feedback is merely window dressing.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the future to the TGCSA if you continue down this path without consulting futher with your present customers
By the way I do not recall any email over the past 12 months asking for my comments/imput to your criteria
Regards
Richard Greenaway
