My organisation works with Calabash on their volunteer programme - we recruit volunteers - our work was recognised last year by The Virgin responsible Tourism Awards....we actively campaign for responsible volunteering - take a look at http://www.travel-peopleandplaces.co.uk/About.aspx?category=20

for questions we suggest potential volunteers ask of sending organisations - these very same questions could be used by hosting organisations when looking for a recruitment partner.
There are good sending organisations out there - those of you who host volunteers need to find them and put pressure on the "bad guys" to change.I am cautiously optimistic - I can see change. Thanks Paul - its a joy - a challenging joy! but nonetheless a joy to work with you

CHAPEAU to Paul for dedicating quite some very good thoughts toward thise issue.

One vital fact is missing here:

Volunteers who get exploited, financially as well as idialistically, by companies which betray because conduct unethical businesses like lion farming which feeds the hunting industry should be warned that all the lion cub patting, hand-rearing and walking leads only to 2 things: exploitation and cruelty and has been created to cash in!!

Those volunteers think they are doing good to those lion cubs which also get exploited, abused and later on become victims to the hunting and canned hunting industry.

Educating prospect volunteers is requested here!

There are quite a number of travel agencies , overseas and domestic) which are "specialised" in literally delivering faithful young people to that industry.

Travel agencies which promote, sell and support businesses which are based on unethical actions are committing crimes towards those faithful people!

Any decent volunteering program will be shadowed by those who exploit and betray.

It would be great to have an official "fame and shame page" where all people interested in volunteering can evaluate for themselves whom to trust.
