MEDIA RELEASE: Immediate. 27 March 2007 (Mossel Bay Tourism) ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD FOR POINT HOTEL International tour group Studiosus Reisen has recognised Mossel Bay’s Point Hotel as being amongst the twenty two most environmentally aware hotels in its portfolio. “The survey was conducted late in 2006,” said the owner of the Point Hotel, Louis Harris, “and we scored 74% - which was well above the 56% average for most hotels in most countries.” The survey looked at ten areas of concern - transport; each individual hotel’s situation; general energy use; the heating of water; energy use in the kitchen; water consumption; the food and beverage chain; water separation; sewage and environmental training for staff. The twenty two hotels which scored above 70% in the survey are situated in countries as diverse as Greece, Norway, Thailand, Lithuania, Egypt, Morocco, Germany, Iceland, Portugal and Vietnam. Significantly for Africa-optimists, six of the twenty two are to be found on the African continent. Writing from Munich on behalf of Kiristin Fundinger, Studiosus’ Environmental Coordinator, Simone Rudzinski said that “an investment in the environment is also an investment in the future of your hotel. As the current discussion shows, economy and ecology are closely interconnected.” “We’re delighted with the results,” said Mr. Harris, “because we’re very conscious of our position on the edge of the ocean - it’s a privilege that we are careful not to abuse and one that we’re proud to be able to share with both foreign and domestic visitors. “This survey confirms that we’re doing the right thing by the environment - but it will also serve as a reference point in the future, because we’re determined to improve on our scores.” Mr. Harris said that international visitors were becoming increasingly aware of the impact of their journeys, and that they’ve begun looking at energy profiles when choosing their destinations. “This is something we all have to think about,” he said. “Protecting the environment is everyone’s business.”
