100 Days of Adventure

MEDIA RELEASE - IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 11 September 2006 Land Rover G4 Spirit of Adventure

HALF WAY THROUGH THE 100 DAYS OF ADVENTURE

The Land Rover G4 Spirit of Adventure continues in Gauteng this weekend as the 100 day-long competition meets its half way mark.

Designed as a lifestyle event that showcases both the African outdoors and Land Rover’s new Discovery 3, the Spirit of Adventure is made up of a series of day-long competitions for teams of four. The teams are taken through a series of seven tasks ranging from precision and 4×4 driving to abseiling and bridge swinging, and from downhill mountain biking to compass work and using a GPS. Each task is electronically timed and scored, but the driving between tasks is not competitive.

“Teams find their way from task to task in convoy or using rally-style route books, but they’re expected to follow all the normal rules of the road,” said Dewald van Bergen, brand manger for Land Rover South Africa. “This ensures their safety and also gives the drivers and passengers a chance to enjoy the incredible countryside.”

The G4 Spirit of Adventure was inspired by the growing sport of adventure racing and adventure racing’s ultimate competition, the international Land Rover G4 Challenge (which was won this year by the South African, Martin Dreyer). But there’s one important difference - adventure racing and the G4 Challenge are designed for the super fit, whereas the G4 Spirit of Adventure is aimed at people with less lofty sporting ambitions.

“The biggest problem with designing the event was planning it in such a way that people of average abilities could participate while at the same time making sure that it wasn’t so easy that it didn’t remain a challenge and an adventure,” said Mr van Bergen.

“The positive thing is that we’ve had quite a few people who’ve come back after taking part and said that they’re now doing things they’ve never done before. They’ve Gone Beyond their own personal barriers - which is awesome.”

The four top-scoring teams will go into a two day-long final that will end on the 100th day of the competition. “The winning team will go to England on World Traveller Plus tickets courtesy of British Airways and while they’re there, they’ll enjoy a visit to the Land Rover factory at Solihull. Runners-up will each receive a Garmin GPS,” said Mr van Bergen.

Race Director Mark Collins, of event management company Magnetic South, said “unfortunately we can’t accept any more entries for this year’s competition, but we’re expecting massive interest next year.

“The only way to be part of this incredible experience is to enter on line on the Adventures page of the Land Rover web site.”
